Virtues paint the portraits of political nations. They trace onto the canvas the story of communities — their lives, aspirations, progress and the obstacles they face. The Ukrainian community has always dreamt of unity — nurturing it even in the darkest of times. It defended dignity when it could barely stand. In honour, we found our compass, and with it, self-possession. And when we try to imagine the portrait of the Ukrainian nation — what does it look like? On this day, we come together once again to recall our virtues and our shared compasses. To honour the extraordinary efforts — past and present — that transcend human limits. To recreate the outlines of our own Ukrainian canvas and the life carefully embroidered upon it.

What do we mean when we speak of unity? Do we necessarily recall similarity or territorial closeness? Or do we speak of a symbol of collective effort? In the full-scale war, unity has taken on a new, supra-territorial meaning. And perhaps the best witness to this is the Ukrainian flag — now flying across the world. How do we safeguard our flag in the world?
A community preserves only those virtues it tirelessly cultivates. Honour is one of them. The Ukrainian nation has consciously chosen this compass and follows it every day. Today we will speak about it — about honour — through the experience of the great war.
We know what grounds us, what to demand, and where not to yield. Dignity supports every choice we make and our readiness to defend it. It teaches us our worth and how not to lose ourselves. In dignity, we will carry the memory of who we are — and who we seek to become.
